The electron gun acts as the source of electrons. It consists off an emitter (filament), grid cylinder and anode.

The filament emits electrons when heated to a very high temperature. It is heated by passing a current through the filament.

These electrons are then drawn downward by an electric field. They are focused into a beam by a electrostatic field.
